How much do you really know about the US Navy and what this branch does for our Armed Forces? You might have toured the USS Kidd Veterans Museum, a Fletcher-class destroyer located in downtown Baton Rouge. But day to day, do you know how the Navy upholds its mission to maintain our freedom of the seas?
Every year, the US Navy sets out to interact with Americans and educate the nation through its outreach event, Navy Week, especially those in cities which do not enjoy a significant Navy presence.
Baton Rouge was one of 15 cities selected in 2016 and Navy Week is here for the first time October 31 through November 6! Baton Rouge Navy Week will host various events throughout the capital city to raise awareness and spread The Navy’s mission, sharing with residents why having a strong Navy is critical to the American way of life.
This year Navy Week coincides with the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair, where Navy is hosting many of its events and displays. Baton Rouge Navy Week kicked off on Halloween, with an event at the USS KIDD and proclamation ceremony with the Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and Mayor Kip Holden. The Navy Band played with their concert band and rock band, and there were displays from Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Navy Divers, NASA, Naval Research Laboratory, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, Recruiting and the Ceremonial Guard Drill Team.
Baton Rouge Navy Week continues through November 6, with multiple other celebratory and educational events.
