Immersed in Nature: Exploring Gardens in Baton Rouge

Sit back and relax as you drive amongst the sweeping oak trees that run alongside historic Highland Road. Turn on portrait mode as you make your way through a field of wildflowers. Studies have shown the positive effects that nature and the surrounding environment can have on your mental and physical well-being, and trust us, it’s hard to be sad when you’re frolicking in some of our favorite Baton Rouge gardens!

LSU AGCENTER BOTANIC GARDENS

The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens is an expansive collection of specialty gardens, woodlands, wetlands and arboreta. Take a serene stroll through three miles of walking paths in the Burden Woods, as well as experience the sights and sounds of the Rose Garden, Camellia Collections, Tropical Gardens, Oak Groves and more. Some of the most popular stops along the way are the tulips, in season in February and March, and the sunflowers, in season from June to October.

WINDRUSH GARDENS

Set adjacent to the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, Burden Museum & Gardens is an easy addition to your itinerary and encompasses the LSU Rural Life Museum. Situated on 440 acres in the middle of the city, LSU Rural Life Museum is open-air and features more than 30 unique, historic buildings that will transport you back in time to 19th-century Louisiana. Located just a short stroll over, Windrush Gardens features majestic live oaks and ancient crepe myrtles, as well as azaleas and camellias set within a winding path inspired by the gardens of Europe.

HISTORIC HIGHLAND ROAD

The stretch of Highland Road is home to some of Baton Rouge’s oldest and finest estates, filled with history. The expansive lots offer lush landscaping and fabulous views, as the centuries-old trees canopy the street. The drive also offers quick access to local shops and restaurants, as well as parks. We encourage you to pop into the Highland Road Park Observatory or visit the local wildlife at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center along the way!
