Baton Rouge Hosts Southwest Regional American Chemical Society Meeting (SWRM2022)
The Baton Rouge local section of the American Chemical Society is hosting the 2022 Southwest Regional Meeting (https://swrm.org/) at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center on November 6-9. The theme of the meeting is “Transformational Chemistry and Energy in the Gulf South.” The meeting will feature 19 symposia within various fields of chemistry, poster sessions, an exhibition, and keynote speakers including LSU Professors Isiah Warner and Gabriela Gonzalez. Other special events include an opening reception, a women chemists’ luncheon, a seniors’ luncheon, a diversity reception, an awards banquet, science demonstrations for high school students, and a chemical industry roundtable. This year, SWRM is also partnering with the Applied Polymer Technology Extension Consortium (APTEC, http://www.appliedpolymertechnology.org/), an organization that focuses on polymer technology in the South Central US, which is providing a full day of polymer-themed programming including technical presentations, a poster session, and keynote talks on Wednesday, November 9th.
This meeting is held in Baton Rouge once every 10 years and is the largest chemistry meeting that occurs in the city. The meeting is expected to draw in 750 attendees total including students, professors, and industrial chemists from throughout the region. The meeting gives students an opportunity to present their research and provides an ideal setting to connect jobseekers and employers.
The outreach “Super Science Sunday” event for high school students and teachers will be held at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum Sunday, Nov 6th 2:00-4:30 pm. For students, this event will provide demonstration booths with hands-on activities to engage students in the wonderful world of chemistry. This session will also allow teachers from local high schools to engage in dialogue with university professionals on strategies and tips for growing and maintaining students' interest in Chemistry while preparing them for the next step on their academic journey.
