Some landmarks are easy to admire from a distance. This one is worth stepping inside. Rising above downtown Baton Rouge, the Louisiana State Capitol stands as the tallest state capitol in the country, stretching 450 feet into the skyline. But beyond its height, it’s the details, history, and quiet moments inside that make it memorable. Take your time here. There’s more to discover than you might expect.
Unlike traditional domed capitols, this Art Deco tower rises 34 stories high, offering a different take on what a statehouse can look like. Built in the 1930s under Governor Huey P. Long, the building was designed to stand out, and it still does. Inside, you’ll find marble halls, detailed murals, and symbolic touches that reflect Louisiana’s story at every turn. Step outside and the experience continues. The surrounding grounds offer shaded walkways, open green space, and seasonal blooms that make it easy to stop and smell the roses.
The Louisiana State Capitol is free to visit and open for self-guided tours, making it an easy addition to your time in Baton Rouge. You can explore the interior at your own pace, taking in the architecture and historic details along the way. Plan for a quick stop or take a little longer to wander, it’s completely up to you. Note: The observation deck is currently closed for renovations, but the rest of the building remains open to visitors.
Whether you’re stopping in between downtown plans or building your day around it, this is one place that rewards a little extra time. Walk the grounds, explore the halls, and take in the history that shaped Louisiana. However you choose to experience it, it’s worth slowing down and seeing it for yourself.
