LSU Center for River Studies
Discover the LSU Center for River Studies at The Water Campus, a hands-on, immersive space where visitors can explore the power of the Mississippi River and the story of Louisiana’s coast.
What You’ll See
Get up close and personal with the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model, one of the largest movable river models in the world. Spanning 10,000 square feet, it recreates water flow, sediment (sand) movement, and river changes, even showing a full year of river activity in about an hour.
As you move through the exhibit areas, you’ll find stations on river history, delta formation, coastal land loss, and Louisiana’s ongoing restoration efforts. High-definition projections and dynamic displays help bring the coast’s story to life.
Hands-On Science
The center isn’t just for visitors; it’s an active research space. Scientists, engineers, and students use the river model to study how water and sediment move and to test ideas that support future coastal projects. A partnership between LSU and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), the center plays a major role in understanding and protecting Louisiana’s wetlands.
The Water Campus
Located at 100 Terrace Avenue, the center is part of The Water Campus, a growing district dedicated to water research, innovation, and collaboration between universities, agencies, and private partners.
In-Person Visits
Tours are offered Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., and last about 45 minutes to an hour. Each guided visit includes time with the exhibits and a walk along the catwalk overlooking the river model. Tours must be reserved in advance at rivermodel@la.gov, with a minimum group size of 15.
