Happy Shopping!
Circa 1857
Circa 1857 has been named Baton Rouge's best antique shop by Southern Living and voted best in the city by 225 Magazine, and one visit makes it easy to see why. Housed in a 1920s former drugstore, the shop specializes in genuine French and English antiques from the mid-1800s, sourced from auctions and estate sales around the world. It's the kind of store you walk into without a plan and leave with something you didn't know you needed.
The Pink Elephant Antiques
With over 35 dealers under one roof, The Pink Elephant Antiques covers serious ground. Mid-century lunchboxes, antique chandeliers, shag rugs, and everything in between make every visit feel like a different store. If you're a slower paced browser, clear your schedule and go without a list.
Time Warp Boutique
The largest vintage clothing store in Baton Rouge, Time Warp Boutique covers decades of styles for both men and women, from clothing to accessories. Vinyl records and unique barware round out the mix. If you're looking for something with a past, this is your first stop.
The Exchange
A Mid City staple since 2005, The Exchange is the spot for vinyl hunters, collectors, and anyone with a soft spot for retro media. New and used records, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and vintage video games share the floor, making it an easy place to lose track of time. Worth a stop whether you're a serious collector or just browsing.
Pop Shop Records
If you’re a vinyl collector, then Pop Shop Records is a must-visit. Offering a wide selection of new and used records, you’re sure to find the vintage gem you’ve been searching for to add to your collection. Be sure to check in regularly as their stock changes daily!
Relax or Get Active in BREC's City-Brooks Community Park
BREC's City-Brooks Community Park is one of Baton Rouge's most versatile green spaces. The park covers a lot of ground, with walking trails, a meditation labyrinth, tennis courts, a splash pad, a dog park, and the City-Brooks Golf Course, a 40-acre nine-hole course built in 1926 and one of only 20 municipal courses in the country listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whether you're looking for a slow morning walk or a full afternoon outside, the park can handle it.
Baton Rouge Gallery - Center for Contemporary Art
Located on the grounds of City-Brooks Community Park, the Baton Rouge Gallery connects audiences with local, statewide, and national contemporary artists through exhibitions and innovative cultural programming. Check out their First Wednesdays Receptions, when the gallery is free and open to the public for viewing.
Shop Local at Mimosa Handcrafted
Mimosa Handcrafted is about as Baton Rouge as it gets. Owner Madeline Ellis draws inspiration from the landscape, architecture, and culture of south Louisiana, translating it into handcrafted bronze, sterling silver, and 14k gold jewelry made entirely in her Mid City studio. From pelican pendants to pieces inspired by the Old State Capitol, every item tells a story. Stop into the shop and take a little piece of Louisiana home with you.
Shop Local at Red Stick Reads
Red Stick Reads is a Mid City staple worth making time for. Husband and wife owners James and Tere Hyfield have built something genuinely special on Government Street, with a thoughtfully curated selection of books for all ages, a coffee and tea bar, and the kind of welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to stay longer than you planned.
Barracuda Taco Stand
Barracuda Taco Stand keeps it simple and does it well. The neighborhood taco stand and margarita garden serves award-winning tacos from a covered outdoor setup, ranging from carne asada classics to Korean barbecue twists. Order a margarita, grab a picnic table, and settle in.
Curbside Burgers
Curbside Burgers grew from a beloved food truck into one of Government Street's most reliable stops, and the burger lineup still delivers. Order at the counter, then pick a spot on the patio with picnic tables, shade trees, and a stage that hosts live music throughout the week. The Curbside Classic is a safe bet, but the staff-developed creations loaded with housemade sauces are where things get interesting. Don't leave without a boozy shake.
MJ's Cafe
A Mid City staple since 2011, MJ's Café is Baton Rouge's go-to for plant-based dining done well. The veggie-forward menu covers all the bases, from soups and salads to sandwiches, bowls, and small plates, with most items vegan or easily made so.
Cooking Classes at Red Stick Spice Company
Red Stick Spice Company is part spice shop, part cooking school, and worth a stop either way. The Mid City staple carries house-blended spices, infused olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and locally sourced Louisiana products, but the real draw is the cooking classes. Led by Chef Anne Milneck, classes cover everything from Cajun classics to seasonal menus and plant-based cooking. Check redstickspice.com for the current schedule and book ahead.
Elsie's Plate & Pie
Elsie's Plate and Pie is the only Michelin-recommended restaurant in Baton Rouge, and one bite makes it easy to understand why. Chef Paul Dupré opened the Government Street spot to honor his grandmother Elsie, building the menu around her recipes and a love of South Louisiana cooking that runs deep. The sweet and savory pies are the main event, from a crawfish hand pie filled with Louisiana crawfish, corn, and sausage served with Cajun cream, to the Eye of the Tiger lemon icebox pie topped with blueberry whipped cream. Can't choose? Order the pie flight - it's worth every penny.
Rocca Pizzeria
Rocca Pizzeria brings Neapolitan tradition to Government Street with wood-fired pies built on old-world technique. The dough is hand-tossed and fired at nearly 1,000 degrees, and the results speak for themselves. The Pistachio, a white pie with bacon, rosemary, fingerling potatoes, fresh mozzarella, local honey, and pistachios, is a standout, but the full menu rewards exploration. Save room for the garlic knots.
Brasserie Byronz
Brasserie Byronz brings French-American flair to Mid City with a menu that balances classic brasserie dishes and Louisiana comfort. French onion soup, steak frites, pot roast bourguignon, and crab mac and fromage share the menu with creative cocktails and a solid wine list.
Mid City Nightlife
When dinner wraps up, Mid City keeps going. Government Street and its surrounding blocks have quietly built one of the more interesting nightlife scenes in the city, with bars and live music venues that draw a mix of locals, creatives, and regulars who've been coming for years. Whether you're looking for a laid-back spot to end the night or somewhere with a little more energy, Mid City has the room for both.
