Back in 1996, Louisiana State University graduate Todd Graves had a vision: a restaurant dedicated solely to chicken fingers. His business plan for the food chain went on to receive the lowest grade in his college class. After facing rejection from investors, he traveled to Los Angeles where he would go on to work 90-hour weeks as a boilermaker to save up money. He then traveled to Alaska to work as a fisherman, eventually launching the first Raising Cane’s location at 3313 Highland Road — just steps away from the North Gates of LSU's campus.
The restaurant’s name comes from Graves’ beloved Labrador Retriever, Raising Cane, whose spirit of loyalty and enthusiasm became an infectious symbol of the brand. During construction, Graves even uncovered a faded, hand-painted mural from the building's past as a bread bakery and chose to leave it intact—preserving a unique piece of history inside what would soon become an iconic Baton Rouge landmark.
Today, that original spot — commonly referred to as "the mothership" —remains a Baton Rouge staple, attracting locals, students, and visitors who want to experience the history behind one of the most successful fast food chains in America.
