A City to Share: Paul & Lindsay Dupré
We're Paul and Lindsay Dupré, owners of the Michelin-recommended Elsie's Plate & Pie, and yes, we spend A LOT of time thinking about food. But Baton Rouge keeps us busy way beyond our own kitchen. From one of the best burgers in town to biking the levee on a Saturday morning, this city never stops giving us a reason to get out and do more. Here are some of our favorite ways to explore it. We hope they become yours too.
Fresh Starts
Start the day with a visit to the Red Stick Farmers Market to check out what's in season. Open every Saturday morning from 8 AM to noon, we find anything from fresh Louisiana strawberries to meat and seafood. After stocking up on fresh fruits and veggies, head to Red Stick Spice for gourmet spices, kitchenware, gifts, and more. You can even sign up to attend a hands-on cooking class, where you'll learn to cook Louisiana-themed dishes.
Locals Tip: In addition to the farmers market, browse art made by local creators at the Baton Rouge Arts Market every 1st Saturday of each month in the same location.
The Other Side of the Table
When we're not feeding the people in our city, we're being well fed by them. For authentic Italian food, Anthony's Italian Deli has a muffelatta with your name on it. For the best burger in town, we think Iverstine Butcher has earned the coveted title. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, it's Baton Rouge's only whole animal butcher shop, with every cut — including that burger — being sourced from local farms and processed right in house.
Golden Hour
When the sun sets, it's the perfect time to take a walk (or a bike ride) along the Mississippi River levee and take in an epic sunset. For more entertainment, the Manship Theater is our indoor escape to catch live music, comedy shows, or a movie on the big screen.
Locals Tip: Check out the Sing the River Sculpture along the levee, which is connected to sensors in the Mississippi River and plays music that corresponds with the rise and fall of the water.
Expect the Unexpected
What if we told you some of the best Mediteranean food can be found right here in Baton Rouge? Zorba's makes all of their Greek dishes with fresh ingredients, including fresh herbs from their own garden. If we're in the mood for something a little more Southern-inspired, Louisiana Lagniappe serves anything from a classic seafood gumbo to more unexpected combinations like jumbo lump crab and shrimp spring rolls.
