Manship Theatre Gallery for Emily LaCour: The Inbetween

Exhibition Dates: August 7- October 15

Emily LaCour’s work has been exhibited throughout the nation in galleries, fairs, and contemporary art centers such as Susan Eley Fine Art in New York, Contemporain Gallery in Baton Rouge, Aqua Art Fair in Miami, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe. She received her BFA in painting and drawing from Louisiana State University then continued her studies as a fellow of the Meadows School of Art at Southern Methodist University where she was awarded her MFA in 2014. She travels for lectures, residencies, workshops, and is featured in several painting publications. She currently resides in Dallas and has spent the past few years between Texas and Louisiana, where she creates work and is an advocate for art education both privately and at the university level.

Contemporain Gallery in partnership with Manship is pleased to host Emily LaCour: The Inbetween, an exhibition of recent paintings that embody loss, the uncomfortable, the transcendent, the illusive, and the sacred space created between us. Her paintings are visual events that embody states between gesture sequences, binary verbs, and her own actions in paint. LaCour’s processes yield an oscillation between the figurative and abstract. Whether her paintings hold the space for one that could be there or it is recognizable in form, the presence of a pictorial figure and implied body in motion is often felt. She often records video and works from the video stills as a way to re-perform her own memories, reanimate memory, and borrow rituals tethered to traditions of the South, Western notions of “self help,” and the woman’s body as an emotive conduit.
